Strategy
“The very essence of leadership is that you have to have vision. You can’t blow an uncertain trumpet.”
~Theodore M. Hesburgh
Coaching team leaders is a very rewarding experience, you get to share and learn with some really smart people.
In a recent group coaching session with team managers of a client of mine, we were discussing about team leadership – their roles and responsibility.
During this particular session, we talked about mission, vision and value statements. Do they matter? Are they needed?
To some extent, a company (and the people making it come to life) needs to define these things; after all we need to know why, what, and how we are doing what we are doing. One thing most people miss though is that these statements are alive. They can mutate and change over time, reflecting the Zeitgeist of the company. Statements “carved in stone” are usually moot.
So how do team leaders and managers align their staff?
Over the years, I found that Strategy is way more important to galvanise your team. If you are capable of transmitting clearly what problems you are trying to solve, why this problem is important to the company and how you plan on doing it your team will align to the cause more readlily.
